how do I select more than one message at a time for archiving

To select a block of eg: 10 emails. * click on first email * hold down shift key and click on last email. * this will highlight all in between To hightlight all emails in a folder. * click on first email to get focus. * press and hold down 'Ctrl' key and press 'A' key * this will highlight all emails. To select various emails: * press and hold down 'Ctrl' key and then use mouse to select various emails * they will appear as 'conversations in the Message Pane * click on Archive button.
