How do I enable Enigmail for my outgoing messages?

I just installed Enigmail on my Thunderbird. I generated a public and private key and sent them to a friend of mine. They replied and sent me their key.

They can encrypt the message with my public key, but I can't encrypt the outgoing message using their public key. On the top of the email it says "Enigmail is disabled for the selected user"

I have added their public key to my "key manager". I also added a "per recipient" rule for my friend that looks like it should allow encryption. Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong?

I am using Ubuntu 14.04

I attached a screenshot of the top of my email tool.

Are you saying you sent both, public and private key to your friend?

I can't encrypt the outgoing message using their public key.

Do you see your friends key in Enigmail - Key Management?

I also added a "per recipient" rule for my friend

Whether you need a per recipient-rule for your friend really depends on your settings and what you're trying to achieve. A per r-r isn't necessarily needed in order to be able to encrypt.

Take a look at the Enigmail documentation. https://enigmail.wiki/
