What version of OS X do you have?
Firefox 3, 3.5 and 3.6 all require at least OS X 10.4, and Firefox 4 will require OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. If you try to install one of these on OS X 10.3.9 or earlier you will get an error message.
The last version that works on OS X 10.2 - 10.3.9 is Firefox 2.0.0.20
