The advertised Thunderbird Migration from EWS to Graph DOES NOT WORK!

tmp003

I have read the topic "Microsoft EWS to Graph Migration October 2026". I have followed the instructions meticulously MULTIPLE TIMES. Unfortunately for me, it DOES NOT WORK!! After deleting the EWS account, I proceed to create the new Graph account, but it fails (has failed) EACH AND EVERY TIME I've tried it. I finally had to give up, and restore/re-install/setup the Thunderbird EWS version. The failure reported on each failure was an "authentication failure".

My OS is macOS Tahoe 26.7.1; My Thunderbird version is 158.0. This is distressing! If there is an issue, I would expect T'bird to belay the update until the issues were fixed. If there is a "trick" required, I would appreciate someone sharing it with me. I'm aware that the causes of these issues is "Microsoft Incompetence", but AFAIK incompetence is not "contagious" - I don't understand T'bird/Mozilla releasing a fix with detailed procedures without testing.

EDIT: One other piece of information that may or may not be useful. The article "Microsoft EWS to Graph Migration October 2026" mentions a "Microsoft 365/Exchange Online email account". My account is an "Exchange Server" account; the Exchange server is hosted by Microsoft.

Thanks for any advice.

Best Regards, ~JM

If you're using Exchange Server, then you should continue using EWS. I was not aware that Microsoft provided hosted Exchange Server accounts, but the Graph migration applies *only* to users of Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online accounts and Exchange Server does not support the Graph protocol at all.

Eleanor,

Thanks so much for your reply. This is so-o-o confusing! How does one even know the difference between a "Hosted Exchange" service/account, and an "Exchange Online" account? Could I be using an incorrect name?

When I asked Google's "AI Bot" the question, "What is the difference between an "Exchange Online" account and a "Microsoft-hosted Exchange Server" account?", the answer it gave was:

"There is no operational difference between an "Exchange Online" account and a "Microsoft-hosted Exchange Server" account because they are two different names for the exact same service."

Since this "Graph" conversion failed, I've actually been making serious, rapid plans to abandon my "MS-Hosted Exchange account", and move to an IMAP service hosted by Migadu (a Swiss email service provider)!  :0

May I ask where you have gotten your information??

Thanks Again, ~JM

I was taking your word for having a hosted Exchange Server instance. Microsoft's naming confuses me too sometimes :) So it sounds like you possibly do have a Microsoft 365 account, in which case graph should work. Are you going through a third party email provider such as GoDaddy?

Wow... please, please never take my word for anything Microsoft-related!  :) I despise those creeps! Anyway, I finally got in touch with a Microsoft tech support person for my Exchange account, and he confirmed it for me: "My Exchange" (the server I use) will also lose EWS support "soon".

FWIW, the only ones that won't lose it are the ones that have their own in-house Exchange server!... I asked the Tech Support guy, "How does that work?... I mean 'insecure' is 'insecure' no matter where it's hosted?" The answer was "typical Microsoft"; i.e. "blah, blah, blah" - he either didn't know, or wouldn't say  :) My guess is this: It's simply more MS lies, more MS deception.

All that said: I have now invested about 5 or 6 hours of my time trying (on my own, and with an assist from Google's AI bot) to get Thunderbird to set up to use "Graph"... It just isn't happening... Graph might work for some, but on my macOS (Tahoe) - IT DOES NOT WORK. It seemed at first to be an authentication issue while using the "automated" method, but last night I tried it using a manual setup... I didn't get the "authentication failure", but it got to a point after entering everything manually that the "ball started spinning", and it never stopped until it timed out, and T'bird "gave up". I have to tell you that IMHO, there are "issues" with the T'bird implementation of Graph. Maybe it's something unique with my setup, but either the documentation has holes in it - or it's just "not ready for prime time"?

I'll be glad to help anyone who wants to look into this, but after 6 hours of trying everything I could think of ... unless there are some changes made, I'm done with Thunderbird as a Microsoft Exchange client.

Best Regards, ~JM
