My email host Claranet has said to gain access to my account I have to change my security settings to TLS/STARTLS or SSL/TLS. I have tried this but Thunderbird won't connect.

The recommended (secure) settings are:

incoming POP server: pop.clara.net, 995, SSL/TLS, normal password, email address

incoming IMAP server: imap.clara.net, 993, SSL/TLS, normal password, email address

outgoing SMTP server: relay.clara.net, 465, SSL/TLS, normal password, email address

If you satisfy the requirements and still can't connect, disable a VPN if in use and possibly disable antivirus scanning of email.
