The search container in the New Tab page is your default search engine, the same as used in the default Homepage, the Location Bar and the separate Search Bar.

As far as specifically having your Homepage open in a New Tab, you'll need to install an add-on such as this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/
