We received an email (that appeared to come from friends) that had a website address to go to in the message which we did not access. However since then we have had many occasions when this same email was sent to all our address book appearing to be forwarded by us and not appearing in sent messages. We had our computer serviced and cleaned up and then again this is happening after receiving another such email. How can we prevent this happening and protect our address book - collected, imported and personal?

How do you determine spam messages have been sent from your account?

Several (6) recipients of the email called us and asked if we had sent it was how we determined that a message was sent but did not appear under the sent file.

If there is reason to believe your account has been compromised change the account password ASAP. You'll then also need to reset the password Thunderbird has remebered for the account. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Setting_and_changing_email_passwords

Also thoroughly scan your computer for malware. Even though the below article has been written for Firefox, it also has general instructions you should follow. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware#w_how-do-i-prevent-malware-from-being-installed
