using TB 31.4.0 any attachment of any kind will not open. click the attachment, dialog opens, click "open" no error message, no tab opens, no window opens and no messages of any kind. dialog box just disappears.

NOTE: going to options>attachments and deleting the association link, then re-associating does NOTHING.

if you delete and do nothing in Thunderbird but open the attachment to allow automatic associations. Does it work then?

I've tried that. but repeated it for you... deleted the "open jpeg as microsoft viewer" . Did nothing else as you requested. then attempted to open a jpeg attachment, saw the dialog and clicked "open" dialog disappears, but NO viewer comes up.

Noticed that a action association has not re-appeared in the attachments menu.

So the issue is in Windows not Thunderbird. That is the point of the exercise.

what is basically happening is Thunderbird has no idea what to do with the file. So it is passing a reference to it to windows and asking the operating system to do something with it. Apparently it is, but not well.

If you save the attachment to the desktop and double click, I assume it opens?

Close all running applications (it makes the coughs and starts less latter) In the start menu / Search type %temp% Delete everything in the temp folder that opens in explorer, including sub folders.

Otherwise in the start / Search type cleanmgr.exe and press enter and allow the application to go through all the disk clean steps but make sure the temp files are cleaned.

Cleaning up the temp files (A real weakness of windows) will most likely fix the issue. It will also probably lead to an appreciable speed improvement.

Didn't work. I had recently done a clean operation, but still there was a lot in the temp folder. ran the manager, rebooted. no change no fix.

A hint. there's no association for *.jpg in TB at this point. there is for all the other file types, *.gif, *.pdf etc. none of them work. So the hint is that TB never even gets to the point of associating the *.jpg. The dialog box still seems to direct it to the microsoft photo viewer

Thunderbird is not getting anything back from the operating system to create an association with. There should be no association in Thunderbird. In it's absence Thunderbird goes to the operating system. The dialog you see asking what application to use is Windows not Thunderbird.

What this means is there is probably wrong with file associations in your operating system, Does the attachment saved to the desktop open when double clicked?

Yes, all associations are working and looking intact in the Windows OS.
