I have encountered what looks to be a very old problem but I am on the current version of Thunderbird. I was sent two PowerPoint files and both were only 27 bytes. On the GMail server they are full size and viewable but once they come into Thunderbird they are damaged beyond use. I found posts from 2017 indicating this had been a problem and I have not run into this until the last version update.
