When I send a webpage (here's the code for it) -  :javascript:location.href=%27mailto:?SUBJECT=%27+document.title+%27&BODY=%27+escape(location.href); I call it "Send Link" - it does not show up in my sent folder. It used to work but no more for some reason. I'm aware of Tools, Acct Setting, Copies & Folders, Place a copy in sent folder or place in "Other". This does not help me. All other emails go into the Sent Folder. I am perplexed. Thanks for any help. Donna

That is a mailto: link. The javascript used should make no difference to how the URL is handled, if Thunderbird opens, then the handler is setup correctly for this purpose

Check the From line in the window that opens to send the mail. You will probably find it is not the account you expect it to be.

Thunderbird will generally send mailto: using the "default" account. But before checking that look to see what SMTP server entry you are using for the account you expect to send the mail. Click on the incoming account name in the list you expect to be sending from and look at what SMTP server entry it is set to.

Now Open the outgoing server (SMTP) entry in the accounts list and ensure the default account is specified as the account you want to use. (the default SMTP server is shown in the outgoing server list in bold with the word (Default) following it in the list.

Hi Matt, thanks for responding. I am slowly reading your suggestions and checking it out. Th"From" line has my email address. Found Default acct and it is my email address. SMPT server entry is again, my email address. Clicked on incoming acct name and it IS my email address. "Check the From line in the window that opens to send the mail. You will probably find it is not the account you expect it to be." The "From" acct is what I expected - my email address.

"Now Open the outgoing server (SMTP) entry in the accounts list and ensure the default account is specified as the account you want to use. (the default SMTP server is shown in the outgoing server list in bold with the word (Default) following it in the list." Yes this has my email address bolded.

Have I misunderstood anything? They all seem to have my email address and again I have changed no settings since downloading Thunderbird (3 yrs ago)and so I am still wondering why it changed as it had been working. You have cleared up how to approach this problem -it is not the javascript but how outgoing is handling it. Not sure what to do next. Thanks, Donna

Is the email actually sending ? If unsure - send test email to me - note I've written it phonetically to stop bots. Please make sure to add something like TEST TBIRD in the content so I know it is you.

re : it just doesn't show up in sent folders.

Are you using a POP or Imap mail account ?

If POP: - log on to webmail account via a browser - is email in the server 'Sent' folder ?

Sorry if this sounds a bit mad - but.... Please confirm - when you use that mailto send link - the window that opens with the link etc - it is the Thunderbird Write window and not another program.

Toad Hall, It's a pop server and there are no sent or anything else that are saved, just the inbox. I called my isp and that is what he told me. POP doesn't save emails. Yes, (you're not mad at all), it launches Thunderbird. He also told me that my server setting and outgoing server settings are good. I screenshot it to him - both from my desktop mail settings and my laptop mail settings. My desktop "send link" is working and never stopped. Desktop is Windows 7. Laptop is Win 10. But it isn't a Win problem. He thinks an update broke something because it used to work properly til about 1.5 yrs ago or there abouts. I like a challenge, I've been working on this for about 1.5 yr. I hate mysteries. : ) Believe me, I have looked a lot all over the net and I have seen others complain but no solutions except. Acct settings, copies & folders, choose "other" That did not work. I have resorted to putting my email address bcc, when I send link. It comes into Inbox but at least i can see what I have sent someone. : ) Donna

Obviously a typical webmail isp techie. Not a clue on how pop works :)

re :Acct settings, copies & folders, choose "other"

As you have a POP account which uses it's own set of folders, you should be using: select checkbox 'Place a copy in' select 'Sent folder on:' pop account name

What browser are you using ? If Firefox: - Menu icon > Settings which opens 'about:preferences' in a new tab select 'General' scroll down to 'Applications' Content type 'mailto ' select action 'Use Thunderbird'

Please Confirm you have the browser mailto setting set to use Thunderbird.

Please test:

Use the 'Send Link' - it opens Thunderbird 'Write' window. Edit some comment. Complete the TO fields for suitable person or yourself on another email address. Do NOT send just yet. Save as a draft first. Does it save as a draft ? Can you see the draft copy in Pop account 'Draft' folder? If yes, close original email. If it asks what to do then click on 'Save' button.

Then open the draft copy and send. Did it get saved in 'Sent' ?

To your first comment: Hi Toad,

"Obviously a typical webmail isp techie. Not a clue on how pop works". LOL More - he said a pop server is like going to the post office and picking up your mail and then the mail is gone.

"As you have a POP account which uses it's own set of folders, you should be using: select checkbox 'Place a copy in' select 'Sent folder on:' pop account name."

My pop account name has last name@isp name. com (my email address).

Browser is Chrome and Thunderbird is the default. It must be so because all other sent (except of the hyperlink sent) is going into my sent folder.

Your Second comment: I set up a send link to myself and saved in Drafts. No I do not see it in Drafts! Interesting. Thanks, Donna

Hi Toad Hall

Did control panel, default, mailto, it is Thunderbird. However, I've got loads of errors in error panel!

There are various errors, but nothing is leaping out as an obvious reason for not saving. Do a 'Send Link' to open Write window. Then Save as File Choose to save to desktop as this just a test. It should auto set to save as html. If it wants to do anything else please let us know.

Then open the saved htm file using notepad and post an image of contents.

Do you get asked to enter a Primary/Master password when you start Thunderbird ?

more options

Hi Toad I saved it to desktop and took a look in notepad and - nothing. No html or any other ending. I am not asked for a password when opening Thunderbird. Go figure. Thank you Donna

If you saved the Write message as file type html file to desktop and then opened using Notepad and it is completely blank, then that would explain why no saving to drafts or sent, as there is nothing to save. But it being empty is Weird indeed. Confirm you did save as file and it was saved as file type html.

Toad, "If you saved the Write message as file type html file to desktop and then opened using Notepad and it is completely blank, then that would explain why no saving to drafts or sent, as there is nothing to save." I cannot repeat this. Can't remember how I got notepad. I tried again because you would like me to save write mail as html. Here are my choices, see attachment. I think I am confused. Donna

re: this is what you said in question: "When I send a webpage"

Your 'Send Link' option is used when you want to email a webpage as a link in a new email. When it opens it should open the Thunderbird Write window showing the link in the email. Post an image showing that Write window, so we can be sure it is opening correctly.

Then in that Write window use 'File' > 'Save as' > 'File' It will open a window asking where to save it, so you choose eg: desktop and the 'File Type' should say 'HTML Files' then click on 'Save' Go to that saved html file - right click on it and select 'Open with' and choose 'Notepad. Post an image showing it's contents.

As you can see Save As only allows me to save as text files or all files. I choose all files and save it to desktop. When saving to desktop it does not have an html so cannot save it as such. Donna

OK. Second image - the Email in Write window image says: Write :"Send Link will not put copy in sent folder......" So you would expect that same text to appear when you want to Save as File. But the second image showing what happened when you used 'File > Save as > File' has a filename: 'Photographer captures enchanting photos..' That is not correct. I can only assume you decided to use yet another 'Send Link'.

In which case : Second image - the Email in Write window image says: Write :"Send Link will not put copy in sent folder......" Use 'File' > 'Save as > 'File' choose to save to desktop alter the filename so it says: Send Link.html File type: All files

Then open the saved 'Send Link.html' file using Notepad. Post image of contents

What OS are you using - Are you using Windows 7 or 8 or 10? What version of Thunderbird are you using because that 'Write' window is rather old in design?
