Why does it take over 2 minutes to get a file (I think it uses Explorer) to attach to an email message.

When I want to send an email with an attachment of any size it takes about 2 minutes or more to go and get the file , I think it uses Windows Explorer. This has only started recently and I'm not sure when as I only attach files perhaps once a week but it is very frustrating to sit there and wait while it updates the screen. Has anybody had a similar problem or know of a cure ?

What's your antivirus? Do you have the TB profile folder as an exception or exclusion, even if the AV is Windows Defender?

My AV is Norton Internet Security and I still have the problem when I disable it .

Here is the procedure that I follow. Select Write message, fill in details of message and subject etc. Click on Attach , File(s) Attach Files Dialog comes up after about 45 secs to the previous folder selected. Then navigate to the new required folder and select the required file click Ok. Then by the time it displays the attachment in the Write message panel and you can carry on with sending the message it is over 2 minutes

The best, and only way short of removing the app, method to test the effect of NIS is to start in Windows safe mode and then run TB. If TB performs without delays, then a startup program, which is bypassed in safe mode, is the likely cause. If the delays continue, then I recommend you consult this article that lists the causes of performance issues, in descending order of frequency. It's probably the best way to find the cause.

Thanks for tips they pointed me in the right direction, in Safe Mode all worked great so I disabled all the startup programs but after rebooting into Windows normally the problem was still there. To cut a long story short I'm not really sure what was causing the problem but I think it may have been a hardware problem. So now after two days of trying different things and banging my head against the wall a few times all appears to be working back to as it should be so thanks for your time it's much appreciated.

If it occurs again, download the uninstaller from the Norton web site and use it. If it works in safe mode and not in normal mode it is probable that the Norton integration has mangled parts of windows and disabling does not restore the changes, only disables the software that filled the gaps it made. Only by uninstalling it can you get a baseline situation to either reinstall or change products. Norton is particularly insidious in that way.
