I should have known better. I've lost add-ons going to Version 60. A noob mistake, if there ever was one. Never again, I promise you. Two questions please.

1. If I reinstall V52, will I lose all of my settings? 2. Is there some reason why the installer/updater can't check for the loss of add-ons *at the beginning* of the installation and warn users that this will happen if they continue?

Thanks in advance!

So you are using add-ons that have not been updated. This Thunderbird version is something of a watershed where add-ons are concerned. Any add-on that are not actively supported and developed are likely to cease to be usable in Thunderbird into the future as further changes in the next version will see all current add-ons likely to fail with out update.

So what add-on are you using that have not been updated? It might be time to look and see if there are alternatives that are supported.

You can get any version of Thunderbird you want from here http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ but you will have issues with add-ons that DID update. so this "rolling back" may well be more painful that working through the changes.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Matt. I used the random sig generator and there are no alternatives that I am aware of.

If I reinstall V52 from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ as you suggest, will I lose all of my settings? I.e. is it a rollback or a fresh install?

Thanks, S.

Personally, I would not sacrifice improvements and fixes for a random sig generator

I understand, Wayne. But the sig is important to me in ways that I won't bore you with. So will my settings be lost or retained in a V52 reinstall? Thank you!

Uninstalling Thunderbird via 'Control Panel > Programs and Features, selecting Thunderbird and clicking on 'uninstall' will uninstall the program not your profile.

You could also directly locate the program and delete it. Delete the 'Mozilla Thunderbird' folder. If win 32 bit:

  • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\

If win 64 :

  • C:\Program Files (86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\

Your personal profile is located in an entirely different location and should not be effected. Assuming Windows OS and in default location:

  • C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\

To create backups, copy the 'Thunderbird' folder to external storage device.

Do not use products like CCleaner etc to uninstall as they may also uninstall everything from your user account appdata folder.

then download fresh version of choice and install.

Thank you all for your responses. I hate to say it but I'm migrating to Outlook. I've had enough. The frequent updates to Mozilla products undermines the work of the many contributors who try to make these products better with add-ons. These issues will never go away and I don't have time to resolve them every time I get nagged to update my email client or browser. It's ridiculous. Further, I'm not convinced of the 'improvements' that are suppose to come with the upgrade. My old V5.2 *never* misbehaved. My new 'improved' V6.0 consumes an inordinate amount of CPU (up to 15%!) for an email client and has a rendering issue that requires me to restart the program in order to correct itself. I'm done. M$, here I come!

I've loved Mozilla Firefox for years but it is becoming waaaay too complex for average users like me. The last update screwed up my email, I lost all my bookmarks and tabs specifically set for how I use my system disappeared. I had to call in a tech and pay him for the hours it took for him to straighten out the mess. We ended up checking "return to previous version" . I am now being constantly nagged to install the latest update and am afraid to attempt it. It will have to wait until I can afford to get a tech to come attempt it.
