How can I stop repeating message "Sync encounteted an error"?
Every time I launch Firefox, a black bar appears at the bottom of my screen saying, "Sync encounteted an error". (See screenshot.) Clicking on "Sync now" makes it go away for a few minutes, but it comes back. What does it mean? What is "sync"? How can I stop it?

P.S. The entire error message (on the screenshot below) is "Sync encounteted an error while syncing. Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action." Then there's a button labelled "Sync Now".

You appear to have set up Sync to store data on the Sync server to be able to share this data with other devices.
If you do not want to use Sync then you can disconnect (unlink) your computer.

Are there any messages in the Sync log that might explain what happens?
You can open the about:sync-log page via the location bar to check the logs.

Yes, as it turns out, I think so, although the explanation is pretty opaque to me. Parhaps you can help me make sense of it.
Typing "about:sync-log" into the URL field did show nine entries:

This still hasn't helped. I still get the message "Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error." when I am trying to link to a different computer without the other computer. What's the next step? Thank you
