are you running xp? and using tuneup utilities? if so, then it looks like a registry issue happened to me before, refer to this https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/965506

I'm using windows 7. It might be something to do with plugins but I'm only guessing.

If you suspect Plugins but are unable to start Firefox, and have already tried a new Firefox profile have you also tried Windows own safe mode.

Firefox won't start so I can't reset the settings I am using Windows Explorer instead.

You could try to use the Firefox profile manager. You do not need Firefox to be already running to do that. The profile manager runs so early on that it will often run even if Firefox itself will not open.

You may try Windows Safe Mode even if Firefox will not start ordinarily.
