When I try to open Word .doc or .docx files or pdf files, the download window shows an "ashx" extension. I can force the program to open the Word documents, but PDF files do not open. This is a problem that only started about a day ago.

Although you are using a Mac, if you are using Outlook Web Access with Word, it sends an illegal Content-Dispositon header to Firefox. This is no longer allowed in Firefox 8. Firefox 9 will have a workaround for this so that Microsoft has time to fix their software. See
