After a crash, I can't get firefox 4 to restore bookmarks saved from an earlier version, says "unable to process file."

After a crash, I had to do a clean install of windows 7. It made a complete backup of my hd, including all Firefox files. When I try to restore a bookmark backup (one of the five saved json files) from the old version of Firefox (3.something) to Firefox 4 following the instructions on your site, I get the error message "unable to process file."
