Firefox update and a pop up deleted my open tabs so that I couldn't easily restore history. I tried some of the suggested work arounds but was not allowed to copy (or open file) from profile folder, sessionsstorefile. What is needed for the required "permissions"?

In general you need to make sure no instance of Firefox is running, that would be using the files you're trying to manipulate at that time.
