I want to be able to control when firefox updates are done. many times, i try to sign on for a quick task. The firefox updates immediately kick-in and cannot be stopped. this prevents me from accomplishing my intended task in a timely manner. I want to do the updates on MY schedule, not Firefox's.

Beyond the settings that you can delay the updates there nothing much that the settings allows you to default this acton. There are RegEdits online to do this but such posting of links are removed so you will have to search online for this action as this will RegEdit if the right one will stop all updates until you disable the RegEdit to allow for update checks.

You can do that by installing a policy. You have to do that yourself.
