"send later" now appears on emails. "Send now" is blanked out. How to I change to "send now"?

Suddenly any new emails I write with Thunderbird only have the option "send later" in the upper left hand corner of the screen. I went into the tools and the heading "send now" is faded/blanked out and I can not switch to it. How do I change the send option back to "send now"?

click on the "black" monitor icon in the bottom left corner of Thunderbird with the red cross to place it in online mode. The icons will change to blue and send will be available.
