only works in safe mode
Posting again because the problem persists but now I know it's not due to addons or extensions. It will only show messages on safe mode, although the left bar shows up fine. It's not necessary to check disable addons. The error console shows a number of messages like this one:

Go to your profile folder (Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Application Basics -> Profile Folder -> Show Folder), quit Thunderbird and rename the file xulstore.json to xulstore.json.save and start Thunderbird to see if that helps. This files stores all the folder customizations, windows positions, etc. Perhaps there's something wrong with this file. If it doesn't help, you can go to your profile folder again and give the file its old name to restore your customizations.
