Firefox gives you control over different types of language settings:
- Display language — the language used for Firefox’s menus, settings, and interface
- Website translation — automatic or optional translation prompts for websites in other languages
- Preferred content languages — used to choose the language of multilingual websites (when available)
These are managed in separate parts of Firefox Settings, and they can be used together or independently.

Change Firefox’s display language (menus and UI)
To change the interface localization, see Use Firefox in another language. When you use Firefox in another language, every locale also comes with a list of preferred content laguages that affect how localized the content offered might be during browsing. This list can be customized independently of your UI language.
Set preferred website content languages
Some websites support multiple languages. Firefox can request your preferred languages when sites offer localized content. To manage this list:
- In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click and select (or , in some cases).Click the menu button
and select .
- In the panel, go down to .
- Click next to .
- In the popup:
- Use to select more languages
- Use to delete unwanted entries
- Use to change priority
- Click .
- In the Menu bar at the top of the screen, click and select (or , in some cases).Click the menu button and select .
- Select on the left.
- Go to .
- Click on the dropdown menu to select another language, then click on the to add it in the list.
- Use the handle to move an entry down or higher and change its priority.
- Use the trash icon to delete an unwanted entry.
Firefox will use the top-listed language when available. If not, it checks the next in the list.

Troubleshooting common issues
I still see websites in the wrong language
It may be due to the website’s behavior itself. Some websites may use your session history, IP address, geolocation or system settings to display content in a local language, even if Firefox is set to English. To fix this:
- Check your preferred content language list
- Verify you’re not using a VPN that would be chaging your region
- Clear site-specific cookies that may be remembering language settings:
- Go to the site.
- Click the lock shield icon and click .
