Hi there. I use Firefox for years. After refreshing it a few days ago something went wrong. Now some pages (like my e-mail and you tube) load at basic form i could say. no graphics and images and they appear at the left side of the screen vertically. I re-installed Firefox and did a system restore to a previous date and a virus check. Still have the same issue. Chrome works fine by the way.

The problem occurs on secure sites (HTTPS address)? This problem with unstylized pages can occur if Firefox loads the top-level page but has a problem making a secure connection with another server the site uses for its style sheets.

When you get untrusted connection errors for numerous sites, the problem usually is one of the following:

(1) Error in your system's date, time, or time zone, which throws off certificate validity checks. Sometimes allowing computers to use an internet-based time source can introduce this problem.

(2) Firefox not being set up to work with your security software that intercepts and filters secure connections. Products with this feature include Avast, BitDefender, Bullguard, ESET, and Kaspersky; AVG LinkScanner / SurfShield can cause this error on search sites.

(3) On Windows 10, Firefox not being set up to work with the parental control software Microsoft Family Safety. (To test by turning it off, see: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi.../turn-off-microsoft-family-settings)

(4) Malware on your system intercepting secure connections.

If you have any of those specific security products:

That would be the first thing to check. This support article will walk you through it: Troubleshoot security error codes on secure websites.

Do you still have the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop that was created by the Refresh? Sometimes using system restore will destroy that folder. But if you still have it, check inside for a folder with a semi-random name. (There may be more than one.) Check inside for a file named cert8.db (Windows might hide the .db extension, but there is only one cert8 file) and see whether it is from around the right time. You could swap it in for your new cert8.db file. To try that...

Open Your Current Profile folder in Windows Explorer

Open the Troubleshooting Information page using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table, click the "Show Folder" button. Firefox will launch your brand new profile folder in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that folder open, switch back to Firefox, and Exit using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

When Firefox closes, the profile folder should be front and center, or you can activate it using the Task bar. Find the cert8.db file and rename it to something like cert8-old.db.

Copy Old File in Place of New

Leaving the current profile window open, open or switch over to your Old Firefox Data folder. Drill down into your old profile folder.

Right-click cert8.db and Copy.

Switch to window with cert8-old.db and Paste (either right-click > Paste or Ctrl+v).

Start Firefox

Firefox should start up with the original cert8.db. If the problem with the new cert8.db was that it was lacking trust for your security software, using the older file should solve that. Success?

Thank you very much for your help. at first i tried to alter the cert-8.db file but had the same problem. Then i checked my ESET security software and there it was. I disabled the SSL/TLS PROTOCOL and everything are back to normal. I think i will keep it that way. Thank you again!!
