Chosen solution

The crash is caused by the qipcap.dll file, which is commonly created by Websense Data Endpoint. Please double check that you do not have any Websense software on your system. You can do so by looking at the Windows programs list.

You can also try this workaround:

  1. Open Notepad
  2. Save the blank file as qipcap.dll within your Firefox installation directory
  3. Open Firefox
  4. Click Ok on the DLL error warning

This should allow Firefox to start without issue.

This issue appears to be caused if a user has Websense Data Endpoint installed on their system. Do you have this installed on your system?

Yes I think I do

Where would I look to find that out?

Did this problem just start? From time to time, a Websense update or a Firefox update results in a severe incompatibility.

If this version of Websense is an unchangeable feature of your environment -- you can't update or disable it -- or if updating doesn't help, then you might want to try switching to the Extended Support Release version of Firefox (ESR). This is derived from Firefox 38 and while it will still get security updates over the next month or two, it will not get new features. Websense supports Firefox 38.

If you decide to switch, here is how I suggest installing it:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.6.1esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder, either:

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\Fx44

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx44

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that old folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \Fx44\Plugins
  • \Fx44\browser\plugins

Please try the steps found here to bypass the application and see if Firefox will open.

I don't have websense data endpoint. Is there another issue that could be causing this crash report id?

more options

The crash report shows the qipcap.dll in the modules list, so this file that is part of WebSense should be present on your computer.

You can do a search for this file to see where it located. Do not remove this file yourself to avoid serious problems.
