Problem moving from FF 52 ESR to FF 60 ESR
OK, so I downloaded the FF 60 ESR and after quitting FF 52 ESR, I launched the new version. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that 60 opened without my settings, bookmarks, etc! So I shutdown 60 and relaunched 52 only to discover that 60 had completely deleted all my settings and bookmarks! Years of bookmarks totally gone. Fortunately, I have Time Machine on my iMac so I went to a very recent (two hours previously) TM file, found my FF default profile, and copied it in to the proper place on my internal hard drive. I then launched FF 52 ESR again and everything was copacetic again.
Why did FF 60 ESR not use existing profile data but deleted it instead?

Hi, unfortunately was not compatible or was corrupted for use with 60+esr as that is now fully a Quantum based browser while 52esr was not.

Your reply makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Are you saying that Mozilla was not smart enough to figure out how to get FF 60 ESR to extract/copy/read bookmarks files from older versions of FF?
Or that they INTENTIONALLY decided to totally wipe out their user's data collected over years?
Neither. Also it does make sense, but that's ok. Check if you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop Check to see if have a 2nd Profile, your looking for the oldest dated folder :

OK, under ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles I have a folder labeled xxxxxxxx.Default User (the 8 xes denote the 8 characters in the folder name) but nothing named "Old Firefox Data". The Default User folder is what I had to copy from the TM backup file to restore FF 52 ESR to operation.
Perfect. Was waiting to hear back if found. But solved is even better.
So:

Reinstall 60.1.0esr or wait till Sept 5th, when should get a automatic update to ver 60 (there about). But will want to have backups.
Or can try again if just really care about Bookmarks do a a download again or use same installer and then import bookmarks by opposite of the export you did already.
If want settings then install and myself am not great at Profiles but need to keep Firefox closed while working on the Profile and then :

These things are in the Profile :
- bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
- bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
- cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
- formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
- logins.json (passwords) and key4.db (58+) or key3.db (57 and older) (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
- if you only have key3.db then make sure to remove an existing key4.db
- cert9.db (58+) or cert8.db (57 and older) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
- if you only have cert8.db then make sure to remove an existing cert9.db
- persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
- permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
- sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)
If you have replaced the previously profile that was used with Firefox 60 then I don't think that it is possible to reconstruct what went wrong and determine if Firefox created a new profile for some reason or initialized some files.
Did you check the profile folder to see if there were files with a .corrupt appended or files that had a number in their name?
Were there still compressed .jsonlz4 backups in the bookmarkbackups folder?

Yes, and the folders were basically empty, no *.corrupt named files etc.
Well, I decided to work with my MBA first and go to FF60.1ESR. It worked except even though I have the Bookmarks Toolbar enabled, all I have is a totally blank bar - the 23 folders in in the toolbar are missing.
The more I read those links you posted the more confused I get. The newer versions of FF should be able to just read, display, and use ALL of the bookmarks from earlier versions of FF. I'm not going from FF to Safari, or other non-FF browser.
So let's try to get the Bookmarks Toolbar working and its hundreds of bookmarks available. If I can get the MBA working then maybe I can get the iMac working by going from the MBA to the iMac.
I'm going to need step-by-step instructions in simple plain US English - no tech jargon please.

Your previous Bookmarks on the Toolbar are in a Folder called Bookmarks Toolbar, I have about a dozen or so. It is amazing as to what changes with wide open fertile ground.
Just drag them out of there and back to the one that is Visible or drag them up to the new one that was created.
Glad you know what a MBA is, that that was after a BA and before a PHD
Well doing a SECOND backup and a SECOND restore of my bookmarks file in FF60ESR on my MBA seems to have worked as I now have a populated Bookmarks Toolbar. I'll continue to plug away and see what I can do regarding the iMac.
Once I have my bookmarks all fixed, the next problem is to get the tabs moved to their proper location below the Bookmarks Toolbar; this should be a checkbox setting Firefox>Preferences>General

OK, I have FF 60.1ESR up and running on El Capitan complete with the Bookmarks Bar.
Only one major problem left to fix: getting the tabs back into their proper place BELOW the Bookmarks Bar. Where is the setting for that? I've looked in FF Preferences but can't find it.
