Filters move messages between folders endlessly, not just from inbox

I have set up filters for promotions, investment, social etc. Mozilla help says filters work only on Inbox, but I see messages that fit criteria for several folders moving back and forth, in and out of trash even. How do I stop this?

Thunderbird filters are not server side filters. Did you perhaps create filters on your providers web site?
