How do I back up messages and address books to an external drive?

I've used Mozilla search but did not find an answer. I want to back up my Thunderbird message folders and address books to an external hard drive. I have a Win 7 Pro PC. When I look at the Setting for a TB account it shows a path of C:\User\Oscar\AppData\etc. However, when I use Windows Explorer I find no AppData sub-folder. When I try the Browse button in the Settings display it shows one folder, Trash.sbd - which is empty. If Windows can't see the path, much less the files/folders of interest, it will not support copying that data to an external drive.

So...how do I get there from here?

BTW, yesterday my system crashed and all my TB messages and address books are gone. Trying to preclude that going forward.

Thank you.

The profile may be a hidden file. Set explorer to show hidden files.

And I do that how?

Earlier I had gone in and thought I had done that but now I cannot find that setting AND I no longer have the C:\User\Oscar folder, just C:\User\Public. I've also set permission to allow "full control" - all block check as permitted. Having just reinstalled windows, I really do not want to do it again.

Not knowing what version of Windows you are using then you need to Google Show Hidden Files in Windows ??
