How do I download my email to a folder ? Currently this program is acting like a webportal and no email is being downloaded.
I have looked everywhere for a simple explaination to how to configure this so that my email are downloaded into a folder and then available for the inhouse backup system. Currently Thunderbird acts like a web portal with zero downloads. Furthermore I am not sure what happened when I deleted my trash and ended up losing all of my emails on the webserver as well. Very frustrating!

Sounds like you are using IMAP service. IMAP is where the messages stay on the server and you just remotely view them with your email client. Whatever you do in the client is reflected on the server. If you want to keep local copies of messages you need to move them into a folder under LOCAL FOLDERS before deleting them.
You might want to read up on the differences between IMAP and POP email service and then decide what works for you.
