search bar does not accept enter key input
Hi, I am running firefox 28 on Ubuntu 12.04 16 bit. Since yesterday my firefox has been playing up. The search bar accepts typing in text but won't accept the <enter> afterwards. I have tried disabling some add-ons and restarted in safe-mode and still doesn't work. Pointers and suggestion would be helpful. Thanks.

Unless it is a problem with a particular search or with your keyboard itself that is unusual and not something I have noticed being reported before. I am using Firefox on Ubuntu 12.04 and mine is working ok.
- Presumably no problems have been noticed with the Keyboard ?
- What happens if you
- Use the magnifying-glass icon and click on that instead of using the keyboard ?
- Select and use another Search engine other than the default,do they work ?
Try creating a new additional test profile, and then use that in SafeMode, and with all plugins disabled. Does that work ?
More Details
Using multiple profiles is not something we shout about on this forum. It is I think considered too advanced. It does have some dangers in that you may accidentally delete profiles for instance. It is however possible to manually backup profiles, and that may be a good precaution to take. I would also strongly suggest that you follow this good practice (At least until you are proficient enough to manually recreate and modify profiles)

Just remove shortcuts if not in use. Delete the wrong one and you lose settings, passwords & bookmarks etc
Uses of multiple profiles include
- Testing, with clean or temporary profiles
- Different users, or different work type within the same OS account. That may include different bookmarks files &/or a different set of addons.
- Running multiple Firefox versions &/or multiple instances of Firefox simultaneously.
There are other methods of creating profiles but the best is probably to use Firefox's built-in profile manager.
Read up some of the articles, and if you want to try anything and are unsure post back.

The keyboard works fine in other applications and when entering into the address bar. So there should not be a problem with the keyboard.
The magnifying glass icon does not respond, so this must be related...
Tried different search engines from the list and none work.
I tried starting in the safe-mode before without changing profiles and it didn't solve the problem.
I will try your suggestion of using another profile.... I'll get back soon hopefully. Thanks.
Hi, I reset firefox using the > help > troubleshooting option as I thought this may be the easiest. I saved the list of add-ons etc so installed them after the reset. Seems like everything is working now. I will not make this solved yet as I need to give it some time to see if it doesn't return. Thanks for your advice. J

That method is designed to be simple to use. It now retains not only bookmarks but also open tabs.
I'm having the same problem with Firefox 31 on Ubuntu 14.04. I've made no changes to keyboard settings, only the (automatic) upgrade to FF 31.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
