Thunderbird looses contents of attachments. This has only happened in the last few days

I am using ubuntu 16.04. Until a few days ago Thunderbird attachments have been fine, now it appears to loose content. As far as I can see this is not the ISP. Attachment collected by other means are ok.

Loses how? they are mime encodes text string in the body of the email. Press Ctrl+U you will find the attachment. You will not be able to decipher it, but it is not missing. If it is missing, I would be looking at something that can edit mail as it arrives, like anti virus program or edge devices.
