"Desktop site" does not work when the status is "on".

These both are apparently from "desktop" mode, and you actually appear to be using "desktop mode" for everything it seems. (I also see you're on Nightly but as long as this isn't a recent regression that shouldn't be a factor.)

From the browser side of things this all appears correct and as expected. If the sites then decide differently (e.g. based on media/screen characteristics, or input modes and precision), that's in the hands of the affected sites.

Do you have some examples what you see as "not desktop" appearance, and what the expected outcome ought to be instead for given sites?

"Yes, you're right. I use desktop mode by default, but some Chinese websites fail to load properly in it. I have to disable 'Always request desktop site' in Settings first, open the site (which initially loads in mobile view), tap the three-dot menu, and manually check 'Desktop site'. Only then do they display in desktop mode—which is how I want all websites to appear."
