The Thunderbird application and user data are stored separately so that the application can be updated without risk of data loss.

You should make regular back-up copies of the directory that contains you Thunderbird profiles (user data) in any case, if you don't already. Strange things, bugs, user errors, et cet. can happen at any time. You will feel more confident with a recent back-up copy.
