How do I save website content or websites from the cache instead of redownloading them?
The last time this question was asked, the answer pointed to a plugin which has since been deprecated. Is there any way to achieve this with an up-to-date browser?

Firefox already saves websites and files to your cache so that it doesn't have to download that stuff again. The only real exception is on websites that set the cache to expire after a very short period of time. Generally speaking though, large files (particularly images) are usually stored in cache for a long time.
A website will still send a request to the server each time it visits a website, but that's to verify that the file is has in the cache is still valid. If it is, it won't be downloaded again and will just be loaded directly from the cache.
If you really want to manually save specific pages, you can right click anywhere on the website (other than on an image, textbox, link or button) and select Save page as..., where you will get many save options, one of which is Web Page, Complete. This saves the page and all associated images, scripts and other files. That would allow you to access the page again without an internet connection.

No, I don't believe that you can override the clear cache on exit setting on a site-by-site basis.
