Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try some of the following programs to scan for malware:

• MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
• TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
• Microsoft Security Essentials (A good permanent anti-virus if you don't already have one)

You can check if there has been a new profile created.

I opened the profile manager and it only has one profile there. I tried creating a new one and linking it to the only profile folder I have and it's still the new blank one. What happened to my old profile?

I'm very sure I didn't delete anything. It was running fine last night.

Did you look on the hard drive?

It is possible that a new profiles.ini had been created.

• C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and later Windows 7+ versions are hidden folders.

I only have one profile subdirectory:

\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\7yj60qkw.default-1356627201347

I honestly don't remember if that was the same filename as before or if this is a new profile directory.

My profiles.ini file points to it.

I just did a Windows search through my \Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\ directory for any file modified before today and all it turns up are old crash reports.

You didn't get started into a temporary Windows profile did you? (Is your wallpaper the same, all your icons there, etc)

No, Windows is perfectly fine.

...wait a minute. I just noticed a folder on my desktop that says "Old Firefox Data"

Okay, there we go. I just created a new Profiles subdir and copied all the info from the Old Firefox Data folder and everything is recovered.

Hopefully someone else finds this who has the same problem in the future.

Do you have an Old Firefox Data folder on the desktop that may have data from the previous profile?
