If Firefox is a universal password, then does it take the place of my other passwords. That would be fine. However, if it simply takes me to my other list of passwords and I forgot one of them, I am back where I started, or lost. How do I proceed from there? Or do I not understand how the Firefox system works??

The master password that you can set in Firefox is used to encrypt the names and passwords that are stored in the Password Manager with an extra level for enhanced protection.
If you lose or forget that MP then you can no longer access those stored u/p and they are all lost.

On Mac Firefox may also be using the Keychain to store the passwords.
