When I click a mailto link in Firefox, it no longer opens a window for me to write and send the email in Thunderbird (which is my default email app and is open all the time).
Not sure. Possibly since I got a new laptop with Win 7 or maybe since my last Firefox update. I usually have a very current version of Firefox and Thunderbird. My laptop is 64 bit.

Check the value under Tools -> Options -> Applications, filtering for mailto, and make sure it is set to Thunderbird.
