Firefox Nightly Not Auto Updating

I installed firefox nightly on a Fire Tablet. I was under the impression that firefox nightly would auto update even if the google play store doesn't exist on the android device. It has not been auto updating at all. Am I missing something. Do you need to do something in about:config or was my initial impression wrong.

Firefox for Android Nightly will currently only update through the Google Play store.

In the past that was not the case which meant that you could get an updating copy of Firefox for your device, but that code was removed over two years ago now.
