I keep getting a message about an update to firefox and select download which fails time after time. I have ver 96.0.2 and 97 download keeps failing. Is there some problem with firefox that is preventing an update download? If it is not going to download, how do I get rid of the update available notice that keeps popping up and never downloads?

Are you getting the full installer from; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

No, I get the popup notice of an update available and when I select update it takes me to another page that does nothing. Even when I go to help in the tool bar and select Update to 97.0 I get Update failed. I have recently been having problems opening emails containing links that I normally use and get things like "secure connection failed" and "try again". Trying again and again yet nothing changes. About to dump Firefox.

What security software are you running?

I keep getting a message about an update to firefox . . . .

Whenever you get a message / popup that software / files need to be updated;

DO NOT USE ANY OF PROVIDED LINKS

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be Malware or a Virus. Anytime you want or need to check for upgrades, go to the website of the True Owner of the program in question. For example, to check out Firefox, go to https://www.mozilla.org

You can report such a site at; http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/ Google Report Phishing Page which is the same when done while on site by going to Help > Report Web Forgery
