Can't download messages containing pictures and attachments-what do I do?

Thunderbird can't seem to download emails containing pictures or attachments. I can access them directly from my webmailpowerx server but not through Thunderbird. Other emails that come after the ones containing pictures will not come through either because the pictures will not download.
