Why is Firefox unresponsive even though everything is up to date and not under heavy load?

Got a new gaming laptop with an i7 &16 GB RAM, when running world of warcraft and trying to use firefox I keep getting instances where it just sits there saying connecting in the tab description and not loading pages (simple search request, no videos or anything). when looking in task manager my overall CPU usage is not even over 30% and firefox will show 0-1% like it's not even trying to do anything. Also seen where the application shows up but the process is not listed. All drivers and software is up to date. thoughts?
