Why do I have to enter the master password almost 20-times (no exagerration) when I open Thunderbird?

I use a master password for Thunderbird. I also use Lightning. In the past, I would need to enter the master password twice (once for Thunderbird, once for Lightning). Within the last couple of months, I am now prompted to enter the password nearly 20-times when I start Thunderbird. This is occurring on both my laptop and desktop computers. I can disable the master password altogether, but I do not like to do that with my laptop since it is often left unattended in my classroom. I have tried disabling various add-ons, eliminated the add-ons altogether, but I am having no luck getting rid of this problem.

I don't know what might have changed. Thunderbird will prompt for a password if it has failed, and is therefore assumed to have changed, or if more than one password is stored for an account.

Being prompted for the password twice or thrice set me off in search of a solution, and the one I found was this add-on:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/startupmaster/

which consolidated my two or three login prompts into one. It may help you, but the possibility of multiple stored passwords may still be at the root of multiple login prompts.

This add-on did not help me. I am still asked repeatedly to keep entering in the master password.

This is often related to external program in the connection chain. Password vaults and anti virus being the more common. But it is getting to the point security software is worse than the disease they supposedly cure.

Try Windows 7 safe mode wsith networking and see if it is an external source.
