Recently Thunderbird has become extremely slow and says "thunderbird not responding", I'm not a techo and dont know how to fix it.
This is the second time that this has happened in the last 6 months. Suddenly Thunderbird has become very slow and when I try to do anything it comes up "Thunderbird not responding" and it takes ages for anything to happen. This is very frustrating. I am not technology minded and don't know how to fix this. I have tried using the support suggestions but to not avail. Please help. Cheers

Hopefully someone more knowledgable than me will post. I did try a google of "thunderbird not responding" and a lot of links show up with good looking discussion, at least, on the first listed link in google. Maybe that will help?

Currently I'm using Norton as provided by Comcast, and Spybot and Destroy. For several years, while using FF, I used Avast & Spybot & destroy.
I've never gotten that message that you get nor problem with FF. I was using FF, but not TB. I only set up TB a week ago.
The slowness I've gotten has been in FF and it's when Adobe Flash plugins don't finish. I get a message and abort it. Since then I've set Adobe Flash add-on to ask me every time if you want to enable. It's still happened, but less often and faster to put up the message so I can abort out. But this isn't at all the message and problem you're having from what I can gather.
Try alt-shift-escape to start up system manager. Click on processes. Under CPU, you can see if anything is running very high percent (click CU to sort the list by CU usage). Of course it's not very helpful unless you have it up while the problem is happening.
I have had this problem for a month or two. I am using McAffee and found that if you uncheck "Email Attachments" in Real Time Scanning the problem is resolved. I hope this helps.
I'm on Windows 8, and I've had Thunderbird hang and go "non-responsive" for 30 seconds to a few minutes while in the middle of typing, when I clicked down on the send button, but realized that I wasn't ready to send, so I moved the mouse off of the send button and released it, and also when I sent the message and the progress indicator hit 100%. Then it just froze.
I did take a couple of process dumps from the task manager while TB was in the middle of its non-responsive state.
Eventually the process comes back and continues to work, but I'm not sure what is causing this.
My computer did hibernate, and I did comeback and log in, with TB running. I'm going to just restart TB, and see how that works for a while.

TB had just recently (last few days) started to act this same way for me...and I have to resolve the issue by rebooting my system!
After doing some "Googling"...I did find a few Mozilla/Thunderbird related solutions/support tickets, such as this one here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/994386
I've followed along w/the suggested 'fixes' and right now, this is what I've done..
SIDE NOTE: I'm running on Windows 7 and all email accounts are @gmail.com related accounts.
- Rebooted into SAFE MODE
- Started TB IN SAFE MODE
Issue has apparently resolved itself, as I'm not having any 'NOT RESPONDING' related error messages when closing TB and I'm able to send/receive emails..which, really wasn't an issue before when running in normal mode.
Thus, I'm not sure what to do!
Should I back up my accounts and then re-install TB?
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
