My Thunderbird email desktop computer "app" has suddenly been running very, very slowly. Why?

I've been using Thunderbird for my email for many years with no problems at all that I can remember, but all of a sudden, just in the last couple days it has become very, very sluggish to respond to clicks and commands. So far as I can know, I've not done anything that should have caused this to happen. Any ideas and/or suggestions?

Do you get a 'Not responding' notification at the window titlebar? What is your antivirus software?
