Firefox 21 won't open mp3s in Windows Media Player

I have set the program to file type option to both "windows media player" and "ask" and Firefox still opens the mp3 in a generic player in a new tab. MP3s played in the Windows Media Player popup window (after downloading) fine in the last version of Firefox 20.X. I've tried disabling the Microsoft WMP plugin (the only way to stop them from opening in a new tab using Quicktime was to disable the Quicktime plugin).

The MP3 MIME settings in Quicktime have all been unchecked and the Windows extension settings all are set to Windows Media Player as the default player for MP3s.

hello sewing1243, firefox 21 now makes use of the codecs that are included in your OS that enable it to directly play mp3 & mpeg files (also for html5 videos). in order to disable that, enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named media.windows-media-foundation.enabled. double-click it and change its value to false.

another way to download the files without tweaking the preference mentioned above would be to right-click the link that leads to a mp3 file or right-click the player in firefox and choose to download the file like that...
