Twice recently friends have reported to me that they have received emails purporting to be from my email address and these are not from me. So scammers have somehow been able to access my address book, know my address and send false messages. What can I do to prevent this?

Not much. It is probably your contacts on Facebook or other social media that has been hacked. This is a serious issue with Social media companies.

YOu address book is stored on your local computer and unless you have linked it to somewhere like a gmail account, no where else. So you would be saying someone was hacking your computer for them to be accessing your address book. That would indicate you need a much better antivirus.
