Thunderbird can't get emails off gmail. Says- "400. That’s an error. The server cannot process the request because it is malformed. It should not be retried. That’s all we know." Now what do I do? I would prefer to keep using T'bird for the convenience but.....

Sometimes that is caused by using a VPN and sometimes when cookies are not allowed. I suggest you verify that you are not using a VPN and that you have allowed cookies in Thunderbird - settings>privacy&security
