downloads not working

For some reason PDF (and I think sometimes other downloads) fail when I try to do them on Firefox. They work perfecty well on Chrome. I either get the message 'download failed', or if the download completes, then before it oopens I get the error message saying that there has been some problem. Paradoxically, this also happened when I tried to download Firefox's own recent update. What can I do to fix this?

What security software do you have?

It is possible that (anti-virus) security software is causing the problem, so check its settings for Firefox. Try to disable security software temporarily to see if that makes a difference.
