I am using an add-on that triggers a "callto" link supposed to open an application "aircall.exe"

I've properly set Firefox in order to link callto and aircall.

Nevertheless it always asks me if this callto is to be opened by aircall as if I hadn't set it before.

Is there any tip or turnuround in order to avoid this confirmation message ?

See enclosed a print screen.

Thanks in advance,

Hi, Firefox 84 introduced site-by-site approval for protocols that launch external applications. One of the motivations was that pranksters were launching people directly into Zoom meetings. I'm not sure whether add-ons are able to bypass this feature while leaving it in place for website links. You might want to alert the developer to the issue.

By the way, the prompt usually has a checkbox to save it, as shown in the attachment. Since yours does not, I wonder whether you are using Firefox in "automatic private browsing" (Never remember history) mode? In that mode, site preferences may not be saved, because saving those permissions would create a trail of sites you visited.

Hi, thanks for the pieces of information but I can't find where to set/unset the "automatic private browsing" mode. Moreover, when I first click I did check the box "always allow..." and I set it in the Firefox options...

Do you have turnaround to propose ?

Thanks again in advance,

Best regards

Here's where to check for automatic private browsing:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the left column, click Privacy & Security and on the right side, scroll down to the History section.

The selector here can have one of three values:

  • Firefox will: Remember history -- no problem
  • Firefox will: Never remember history -- automatic private browsing
  • Firefox will: Use custom settings for history + [x] "Always use private browsing mode" -- automatic private browsing

Thanks. I checked and It's selected as "remember history" so that's not the problem as you said...

Do you think the only way is to alert the developer for this issue or is there any chance to turnaround it ?

Are you sure an add-on is handling the links? What happens if you disable the add-on for callto: and let Firefox interpret the link?

Yes I'm sure. This add-on identifies phone numbers on web pages and enables a link so as to trigger a phone app, such as Aircall.
