Hi all:

I was running thunderbird (v128.14.0esr) installed from Debian 12 (bookworm) repositories with no problems. My profile folder is on a network drive, I know this is NOT recommended but I am the only user and this configuration has worked flawlessly for several years. Recently I upgrade to Debian 13 (Trixie) and installed the flatpak version of thunderbird (v140.3.0esr) to get the more current version than in Debian 13 repos.

My problem is when starting the flatpak version, I get error "Thunderbird is already running but not responding". The "ps -ax" command does NOT show any process with thunderbird in the name and I cannot figure out what is wrong.

Here are the contents of my flatseal configuration/overrides file: [Context] sockets=inherit-wayland-socket;session-bus filesystems=/mnt/fserver/Applications/Mozilla/TBird/Profiles/Default;home;host-etc;host-os;host

[Environment] MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1

My profile is located at /mnt/fserver/Applications/Mozilla/TBird/Profiles/Default and I can access it from my Debian system.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am really really distraught right now. It took me two weeks to get the time and focus to write a long reply to a company's nice email to me. Stayed up till 2am to write it. Deliberately wanted to re-read it in the morning before sending. Gone. Nowhere to be found. I pressed "Save to draft" before closing my laptop. But not saved. This account actually has a "draft" folder, unlike most of my other accounts in Thunderbird, which I also cannot figure out and no one has helped me with.

Thunderbird 142.0 (Windows 64bit) - Item changed on server issue with calendar notifications

Hey all,

For about half of the notifications I get from my google calendar, I get a dialogue warning me that the item has changed on the server and I can submit my changes anyway or discard and reload. It doesn't matter what I choose - the pop up goes away and reappears at the next notification.

I have searched for other reports of this issue and seen it reported many times in the last few years. I have tried all of the known solutions but none of them seem to fix the issue for me.

Here's what I've tried:

- Unsubscribed and resubscribed to the google calendar - Unsubscribed, shut down Thunderbird, deleted the calendar-data folder from my profile, opened Thunderbird, and resubscribed to the google calendar - Toggled "Read Only" every which way - Toggled "Offline Support" every which way - Turned off show reminders (which fixes it of course but I want reminders, that's the problem) - Deleted the offending events in my google calendar and recreated them from scratch - which has returned the same "item changed on server" warning.

I don't know what else to do at this point. I don't see any new reports of this issue so am I just missing something fundamental here? Do people not use google calendar in Thunderbird? Is it known to not work if you have an iPhone that also shows calendar notifications or something?

My desktop specs are Windows 11, everything at latest, no additional calendars other than "Holidays in the United States" (which I think comes with Thunderbird), and the BorderColors D extension to change colors of my email border depending on which address I'm sending from.

After updating to Tbird version 143.0, the status of fetching messages from my email accounts is no longer shown in a status bar that's just below the main message list panel.

I know messages are being fetched correctly, because they show up as unread in my message folders. I've tested sending to myself, and it works !!. I have tried poking around in setting preferences, to no avail. I want my internet email session status line back!

Both my iMac and Mac Air, running macos 15.6.1, have the problem.

Being able to see status of connecting to and fetching from my different email accounts is critical for knowing the fetch operation is proceeding .... and/or working around the occasional connection problem (like: "you're not connected to the internet, dummy !!!)

Recently, some of my Gmail messages in Thunderbird open up as blank pages. And the "get messages" icon in the upper left corner of the message screen is grayed out. The messages open fine in the Gmail browser and app; it's just Thunderbird that has the issue. I've taken the following steps, but to no avail:

1. Repair folder (for the Gmail Inbox). I did this several times. 2. Deleted the index file and let it get rebuilt. 3. Ran in troubleshooting mode.

None of these solved the problem. Any suggestions?

Lately, it seems some junk mail senders have figured out how to keep me from deleting an email from my inbox, even though they've been marked as junk. They only disappear from the inbox for a few seconds, and then re-appear immediately. I can click "delete" over and over, and yet these emails boomerang right back into my inbox. Filters don't seem to work for these senders, either. I can open the filter, see that the email address is already included, click "Run Now," and all I get is a pop-up Microsoft notification that is truncated so that I can't read it in its entirety.

The main offender lately is Heavy on Packers <newsletters@heavy.com>

Why doesn't the filter or even the delete key get rid of messages from this spammer and a few others like it? How does something marked as Junk and deleted keep boomeranging back into the inbox? TIA!

My Thunderbird (version 115.12.2) is running on a Windows 11 system. My profile has multiple accounts configured as IMAP to multiple email services. I also have the Status Bar and Activity indicator enabled. Randomly, both indicators will show busy for an extended period of time. When I view this in the Activity Manager I see one or more folders hung for 10 or 20 minutes downloading one message out of several. This occurs in multiple accounts and servers.

I have researched this and attempted the fixes presented. I have cleared the cache files and compacted and rebuild email folders as suggested, but the slow update still occurs.

Then I decided to try and capture a ProMon.exe trace to see what is happening. What I found was Thunderbird.exe was spending all of the time while hung access the following file: C:\Users\MyUser\AppData\LocalLow\Intel\ ShaderCache\4a5eb0e65e559fc08e65ecb2fa9d650817ae895582a7a7ede162866d3e47a05a, like it was stuck in a loop.

When Thunderbird is operating normally, it is accessing this file but only for short period of times. Research says that it is ok to delete the files in this folder. I did that and it seemed to help for awhile. But it started happening again.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Is there a Windows thing to look further into? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR: an upstream fix in hunspell/de_DE_frami.aff from libreoffice did not make it into mozilla in three years. Why?

The original problem: When typing in German on a non-German keyboard, one types "oe" instead of "ö" and "Ae" instead of "Ä" or "ss" instead of "ß". The German spellchecker with flag "fuer" as an error and correctly suggest "für" as a replacement.

The way the German spellcheckers are defined, they will identify a single use of such a replacement but not two adjacent ones. This had been extremely irritating to me when I try to end my emails with greetings "Grüße".

I type "Gruesse" and the spellchecker does not find "Grüße" as a correction.

The fix: Back in 2022 I finally decided to try and fix this bug myself. I discovered that in order to fix it, we needed to tweak a file called hunspell/de_DE.aff or hunspell/de_DE_frami.aff. I didn't know where to submit this correction, but ultimately found the source for these files to be in the libreoffice project. They accepted my merge request in 3 years ago in September 2022. https://github.com/LibreOffice/dictionaries/pull/40 https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/dictionaries/+/136067

Today's problem: I was assuming that over time that change would propagate to all downstream projects using these dictionaries, but this is not the case.

Today, in September 2025, using ubuntu-snap installed Thunderbird version 140.2.0esr-3, and Firefox version 142.0.1-1 I can see that neither of them include the fixed dictionary - neither in de_DE nor in de_DE_frami.

So here is my question: Where does thunderbird and where does firefox get their language definitions from? Where do I need to submit this fix to the hunspell dictionaries in order for it to finally make it to release?

Having updated to 140.2.1 there are two Outboxes in my local data. They are both named Outbox but one refers to a location of "Outbox" and the other to a location of "Unsent messages". The former is the location where messages to be sent should go, the latter is the location used in previous versions of Thunderbird. Unfortunately Thunderbird is putting messages in the latter. Not only does this mean that my Thunderbird does not match the documentation but also the Send Later addon uses the former and is therefore not working. This seems to be an error in the update process. How can I get Thunderbird to use the correct location ("Outbox")? I can find nothing in prefs.js that relates to the location of the Outbox ... surely it can't be hard coded!
