I reset FF. I should not have done that. Now my old theme, bkmks, etc are in a folder. Is there a way to reverse this?

After a reset, Firefox should have kept your bookmarks, but yes, themes and extensions are not kept.

You should in theory be able to recover by creating a new profile and copying the contents of your old profile folder into it. Then when you start up in the new profile it should be just like using your old profile. It's not guaranteed to work, but worth trying.

Check out the detailed steps in this thread: I just reset Firefox, are my add ons in the "old Firefox data" folder and how do I find them?

Any luck?

I need to know how to undo the reset and get my old profile and bookmarks back immediately. I'm not very computer savy and to read page after page of things that I have great difficulty understanding against the pressure of needing to get the compute working is throwing a stone to a drowning person. I need an undo of the reset. To say you had some kind of a problem before doing the reset as justification for not providing a reset is ludicrous. I never would have done the reset if I had suspected this problem and the duration it would take to fix it. If I could do a reset, I could get operational again immediately and then plan for when it would be convenient to schedule a long term shut down and prepare in advance for what problems I might expect, but again if there was an Undo function even in that situation I could always reset to the old default if I got in over my head and couldn't fix the problem. Instead, I'm not functional and don't have any Idea when or how I will be able to get back on track. To not provide an Undo capability is inexcusable from my point of view regardless of what you may think of the problems I had before doing the reset. I am very unhappy, distressed and disappointed.

Sorry you are having problems after a reset.

If you're having major problems which you can't resolve, start fresh with only your essential information.

It is intended only for use if you have major problems.

I think we are live persons !
We are fellow Firefox users and do not spend all our time doing this, so you may need to wait a while for replies sometimes. I will ask for some further information that may assist jscher2000 when he gets back, (or anyone else trying to help you).

Sorry we do not do support by telephone or live chat. That would take a lot of people and only help a few people with problems.

The reset is rather a last resort but powerful & simple quick fix method.
You are posting from Firefox and so it would appear it worked to get you back online. It should have retained your bookmarks.

  • What was your original reason for doing the reset ?
  • Was that related to a bookmarks problem ?

You say

I'm not functional and don't have any Idea when or how I will be able to get back on track.
  • Besides bookmarks which I imagine are very important what else is not functional ?

It will be annoying to have lost themes and customisations but hopefully that does not prevent you from using Firefox.

Can you explain in a bit more detail what the problem is with the bookmarks ?

  • Are you able to create new bookmarks ok ?
  • Are you able to see and use the new bookmarks you create ?
  • Are you able to see and use any bookmarks that were created before the reset ?

I hope we are able to help you sort this out.

Hi Tank345, I gave you a very specific link when I responded in your thread a couple hours ago: I mistakenly reset Firefox to defaults. Catastrophic Mistake! How do I Undo this immediately. I think a 15 minute response time with specific instructions you can complete within about 5 minutes is good for a forum. I don't know why you are following up in other peoples' threads.

I posted this in the other thread. I'll add it here, too, so people don't have to cross-reference. This is my suggested profile resurrection procedure:

Overview

These are the steps:

(1) Create a new Firefox profile
(2) Remove everything from that new profile folder
(3) Copy in everything from the old profile folder

Create a new Firefox profile (Windows)

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):

firefox.exe -P

Note: Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button. Use the default location (i.e., do not click to choose a different folder). Then select that new profile in the dialog and start Firefox.

Open the New Profile folder in Windows Explorer

Firefox in the new profile should look like a factory fresh installation. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using either:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table, click the "Show Folder" button. Firefox will launch your brand new profile folder in Windows Explorer.

Leaving this folder open, switch back to Firefox, and Exit. This will leave that profile folder open in Windows Explorer.

Copy Old Data in Place of New

In that new profile folder, select all the contents and delete.

Leaving that window open, open or switch over to your Old Firefox Data folder. Drill down into your old profile folder. At this level you should see a folder named bookmarkbackups among other things.

Select everything and Copy (either right-click > Copy or Ctrl+c).

Switch to the empty new profile folder in other window and Paste (either right-click > Paste or Ctrl+v). This may take a minute since some of the files are large.

Start Firefox

Firefox should start up in that new profile with the resurrected old profile data. Success?
