I have been using ff for years with no problems ... suddenly it wont start.

Looking at the Task manager, it will create a process, that will use cpu and up to around 34Mb of memory then after a few seconds the memory usage drops to around 1.4Mb, CPU drops to 0% and that's the last I hear from it, it just sits there doing nothing. No window, no entry in the applications table, just a background process.

I upgraded to 17.0.1, no effect. I uninstalled and re-installed, no effect. I checked through your support advice BUT reset profile ... requires FF to start! Restore to default ... requires FF to start! Safe Mode .. requires FF to start! not very helpful ways of solving the "ff will not start" problem ;-)

I have tried ending the processes and restarting, no effect. I have tried leaving them for ages, no effect.

I really need FF back ;-)

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Hi, I had already checked firewall etc (not a newbie, been computing a long time) ... please note that, in my question, I do state that the browsers will not even start, or produce a window, so it is not a connection problem. I am also currently on the same computer using Chrome to interact with this forum. In fact Chrome and Safari work fine although IE appears to have the same issue as FF .... I am running a malwarebytes scan to try and check for issues.
